Last few days

After we left the chooks in Shoalhaven we headed up to the Blue Mountains and a cold surprise. No house sits so a few days in an Airbnb cottage

Our first Blue Mountain experience is a Tiger Snake – too cold to attack us
I can’t make any excuses , the next few days we spent our time walking found the mountains and bush
So prepare for plenty of scenic shots
Our cottage was in Wentworth falls
Lyrebird Lookout
Top of Wentworth Falls
Start of The National Trail – not for me
The Falls
Heading to Sublime Point
Sublime
View over to the Three Sisters and Katoomba
Three Sisters from Echo Point
Base of 3 Sisters
The neck
Top of a Sister
Cold early morning walk

Last shots from Wentworth

Next stop the Grand Canyon
Not Arizona but Blackheath
It was a long walk
Start of the big climb out
Finally out for a spot of lunch
With a view
Evans point and the end of the Blue Mountains for the moment

Drive back to Sydney

Leaving Anita behind to look after Coco and the figs and do online training, I set off on the long drive back to Sydney . Three days later I was to pick her up at the airport and take her to meet the next house owners

Again I am not ashamed to say this is mainly my walking blog
To break the journey up I planned five hours driving a day with a food and walking stop halfway
First stop was Banrock Station winery and wetlands walk
Due to heavy early summer rainfall the lake had destroyed most of the walk and some of the vineyard
But today it was hot
And being a vineyard they had wine – fizzy red
Having loaded up with fruit from Frank’s garden , I forgot about the fruit quarantine rules . This was the only quarantine bin !
Next stop Lake Bonney at Barmera. Again flooding ended this part of the walk early
Too hot for the Cockatoos
First night was at Robinvsle , a very small town on the Murray river
First stop for day 2 was Hay . After a breakfast of chewy bacon and overcooked eggs , another walk on the river
And then a second walk at Narrendera
Second night of the trip is at Wagga Wagga
With storms at the coast and Sydney in the distance
With graveyard Roos
Final break in the Southern Highlands at Mittagong
And the end of a road trip , slow paced and plenty of off road time . Helped on the way by Ken Bruce , pop master and podcasts

A trip to Canberra

So after picnics and birthday parties in Manly it was time to head to meet up with Matt and Heather in Canberra

Bad news again. . After stopping for a few hours in Wollongong for a swim , poor old Norm the travelling Desert Rose sadly perished. Someone didn’t learn from previous mistakes
Stopped of in a winery at Coolangatta, NSW. In the blacksmith’s house
Plenty of vines
And nice wines

Then headed overland through countryside ravaged by firestorms in 2020

M &H were working so there was time to be tourists in the Capital
Starting on a wet day at the New Parliament
In the great hall with an Aussie tapestry
And as parliament wasn’t sitting a chance to see the Congress

And the Senate

The first assembly
And the rain
And when the rain eased I did what I am best at ..
Up Mount Stromlo
With the dog and a load of Kangaroos to the observatory
With views of the ranges around Canberra
And the city
When the sun came back next day , another walk with Luna
Around Narrabundah hill
And in the afternoon of to the Arboretum, to see the Bonzai & see how much they’ve grown since last time Anita was here in 2017
A beaut
Then up the hill to the lookout
For the view

Last days in Sutherland

With the sun out again and hot days mixed in with the rain we passed the last few days in Yarrawarrah with swimming and hiking

The trip ended with seeing Elton John on his farewell tour

With Anita having a long hair do , I jumped at the opportunity for a hike

The coastal walk in the Royal National Park

A little reminiscent of a hike on the Algarve
Limestone Cliffs
And streams
One sunbather
Ending in Eagle head rock
Next day we met up with another Anita , our pharmacist at Beaufort
Visiting her friend at Bundeena
A small resort with a beach in the National Park
Just across the bay from Cronulla
But we couldn’t hang around, with the threat of storms we were off to see Elton
The Allianz Stadium, next to the SCG
We got there early
Elton didn’t disappoint
Though the weather eventually did , those poor souls and Elton got very wet in a mega storm

21st Birthday Girl

All the way from America, Amy came to see us and so Anita & Ella organised a big 21st day

Behind Amy is today’s first birthday objective
On which she will be joined by her brother Daniel, who admits fear of heights
Anita relaxing the two climbers
Whilst the kids are climbing, the rest of us had 3 hours to kill
In the shade on Observatory Hill
Checking out the Bay
Too far to see the climbers
But up on the bridge
Looking down on the Opera House
And then up , there they are , 3rd & 4th from the back
After the climb , off to Manly for Ella’s party
Manly beach party
With Ella
On a lovely evening
Dad flew out specially
Katherine
The Hawling girls
Gina & Luna
Charlie
A lovely night and day

Meeting Max again

After the Hunter and Daniel’s first encounter with Roos , next stop was a reunion with Max & Tiger Boy in a very Christmasy house in Kariong

Jodie wasn’t sure where to put the 10ft 65kg statue after Christmas
Showing us Santa’s Grotto

Tiger with his Santa outfit

Loving it
Treats for us too
With the sun out the holiday crowds were at Coogee . Dropped Amy at her Kings Cross hairdresser and off to the beach
Coogee baths were busy
No sharks in here
But Anita wasn’t hanging around as it was full of jellyfish!
Out for an evening stroll along the boardwalk with the new Converses
The sea breeze was blowing
Went a bit further to check the bay out after an early rise

Back to the Hunter

So with the big bags with Ella and Charlie the rest of us set off for an Airbnb in the Hunter Valley

First stop on the way down , back to Port Macquarie to the Koala Hospital
Not much action here
All the Koalas are sick or injured, RTA’s or Chlamydia
A Joey rapidly climbing a Gum
Unbelievable
No patients in theatre today
The Air bnb was just outside the Hunter Valley so it would have been rude not to pop to a winery
After a tasting and purchases
Then picnic and a bit more tasting at the flat
Lovely backdrop
Then off on Kangaroo hunt
Just a bit further on a family of Roos for Daniel

Christmas

So for Christmas we had a full house . Ella & Charlie had made a mad dash up the M1 from Manly with Daniel . So that made 6 plus Lucy & Marley

Christmas Day was beautifully hot and sunny
So the surfing crew headed off to the main beach , but someone had to take the dogs
And it was hot for the Beagles
The beagles aren’t allowed on the surfing beach
So with a bit of shade for them and I
A mini picnic , with fizz and Bundies
The surfers looking a bit tired
Jolly old Christmas Day , excited about the Hello Fresh chicken
Even a Goana joined us
Best outfits for Dinner
All stuffed with Chook except Lucy
Sisters FaceTiming
Exhausted after Christmas sniffing
The losing team

Sawtell & the Beagles

Christmas is going to be at Sawtell . A small beachside town in NSW just south of Coffs Harbour. A lovely two storey town house looking over the bush , with a pool .

Beagle 1 is Lucy , 9 months old – interests food , sniffing , more sniffing , biting and fighting
Leafy suburbia Sawtell style
Our first night was interrupted by a tree frog , so far unnamed and unnoticed by beagles , therefore obviously odourless
Safely returned to tree
Dog walking with two young beagles is entertaining
But practice should improve things
Sawtell has a long beach with multiple access points
Good surf
And two headlands
A narrow path winds round the northern headland with multiple sniffing opportunities either side
Over the river , the enticing sight of the off leash beach
The railway crossing for another day
The southern headland also has a river , but south is National Park
A rather empty bathing pool
Accessed from a caravan park the beautiful south side of the river for fishermen and paddleboarders
Maybe somewhere for Charlie to explore with his surf board
But all very beautiful, especially while the sun lasts . Rain is on it’s way

Platypus

Maleny is evidently famous for Platypuses. Near the centre of town on the Obi Obi creek is a large viewing platform. If you sit patiently waiting for hours one might show it’s face

We have three dogs here , two of which are over 10 years old and one 45kg . Feeding requests start at 5am followed by a short and very slow 30 minute walk
The lovely Queenslander has verandas on two sides . Here is Anita , waiting Nige and Ali

Who know another viewing spot . And despite the dog and Nige almost treading on a nasty looking black snake , there were long spells of a little platypus diving and swimming. Sadly , it seemed to know where the snake was and kept a safe distance down river from us and Nige wasn’t prepared to venture back into the undergrowth for better views

Heading South

Emu park was as far North as we were going . Anita was very happy to be heading South again . Back to civilisation and clean houses

Last coffee in Emu Park
Good old Riley , looking for a scratch
No idea what this tower does
Stopped off at Bundaberg Distillery for a toon
Taste and purchase
Sadly poor old Derick the Desert Rose didn’t enjoy the trip

Great Keppel Island

With the swell fortunately settling after a few days of strong Southeasterly, keeping the temperatures down to 28 , we jumped on the ferry to Great Keppel. Biggest of the Keppel islands and the only with a resort on . Some of the best beaches in Queensland as you will see

No jetty
Brekkie on the beach
So with Anita relaxing at the resort waiting for a massage
I set off to explore what it was famous for
Bush and beaches
Plenty of sun
And few people
Empty white beaches
And a rubbish dump in the middle
Anita found a nice spot on the “ busy “ beach
With the sea waiting for a dip
Even managed to get Anita exploring
Before the ferry back to
The poor dogs
Desperate for an evening walk
Before sunset

Truffle Hunters

So the new place . Emu Park on the coast near Rockhampton. In the tropics on the Tropic of Capricorn. Two Lagotto Romagnolos, Luigi and Riley

Whilst Anita cleaned the house I took them for a walk
Beautiful coastline
With many islands – the Keppels
And empty sandy beaches
Badly parked boats
Drinks and nibbles and late afternoon dog stroll

Chasing the storm and the break

With the storm wrecking a weekend trip to Fraser Island and Charlie keen to to catch the point break at Noosa . We booked a cottage and hit the road

So with the big storm just south and moving further , we caught the wet end of it at the beach
Charlie along with hundreds of other surfers hit the surf , whilst we checked out Noosa Heads
Then checked out every viewing point
Looking for him
And on the surf beach
But there were too many
Black wetsuited, long haired Surfers
So it was off to the cottage on the hill
With surrounding hills
And a turtle pond ( with no turtles
A lovely veranda to relax on
Before the bugs come out
With friendly cows to feed in the field
And if the dog walker leaves the gate open , in the garden
Good use of the cattle chasing stick
Ella on the gate , lady on the veranda and Anita hiding inside

Anita’s Birthday

The day started with the birthday girl opening her prezzies, a few of which she had carried half way round the world. I had a spending spree in TK Maxx . No where near as good as UK

Fortunately the Surf shop had a towel swimming changing thing
So birthday brunch at the beach with a special guest
Lady ! She’s there somewhere
Burn of the loaded croissant
And Eggs Benedict
Fresh air and swimming before tonight’s pub quiz . Quick on the buzzer Trivia . Sadly most teams buzzed in before we’d started to read the questions. But though we came 19/24 we did win a dessert voucher

Friendly mother and calf

Busy Saturday with an early start then an afternoon whale watch

A very early start , before 8am , but the roads were busy as everyone was of for the Sat am 5k and market at Urangan!
But it was sunny so we stretched our legs rather than lie in
No dogs on Urangan pier
But legal on the boardwalk
After lunch hopped over to the harbour for the last afternoon boat ride with the French , Germans and a few other internationals
Past Fraser Island
Past beaches but no sign of whales
But the captain new where he was going and we had amazing fees of whales , especially a mother and calf and an accompanying female who came right up to the boat and played by us – hence a happy customer
But videos don’t work on my blog so you’ll have to take my word
And enjoy the views of Fraser Island

Granville – not open all hours

So it’s goodbye to the southern Sunshine Coast , a lot of dog walking 20000 steps a day , great beaches and off further up north to the Fraser Coast starting with 3 nights In Granville

Last walk with Chilli and flats beyond
Stopped of for a the Sublime Farm and Brewery at Kia Ora
They had drunk most of there home brew so stuck with a schooner of brown ale
Security guard on door
Got past him as a fair drive to go
Beautiful riverside bungalow in Granville
With a doghouse for me
And a sundowner verandah
With views of the Mary river

Home of Mary Poppins

Granville and Maryborough are twin country towns , nothing much happens until school comes out . But it’s sweet and lots of bird life and birdsong in our cottage over the river

So today was relaxing and checking out the house and local area
PL Travers was born here so there are a few Mary Poppins indicators. We bypassed the museums . Not a museum trip

New pad in Kariong

In the new house in Kariong. A big friendly Groodle called Max ( Maximoo) , Tiger Boy the always hungry cat and two turtles little and large ( not their real names)

Kariong seems a small town just off the M1 highway north of Sydney on the central coast . Bit of a boring town , but surrounded by National Park ( no dogs ) and 15-20 mins to the coast , beaches etc

Early afternoon exercises , next to the pool , under a watchful eye
Then walking Max on Umina beach
Beautiful hard sand , perfect for dog walking and ball chucking
He has a slightly annoying habit of taking the ball out to sea and dropping it
Out as quickly as possible, dangerous critters in there
Sandy poos much easier to pick up , Anita is the best
Straight to the bar – for a cup of tea
And slice of cake
Lifeguard station shut so no point going in to take on the sharks
