Last house sit

So after the stunning beauty of the the Blue Mountains we travelled down to warmer weather at North Richmond in the Hawksbury River Lowlands

A rural house at the end of a long lane
Looking after Murphy the crazy ball chasing black Labrador
And 2 outdoor cats
The house was the parents home of the farm owners – if that makes sense . It’s a complicated
Murph in his ball retrieving paddock
Murph’s verandah
The famous Bilpin Saturday Market
The hills around are Apple and Cider country
And Hill Billy Cider is the best
The farm looking across the paddock on Murphy’s favourite walk
One last hike into the hills
And down to the river
Our last night of house sitting visitor . Thank goodness I am the only one with a mild fear of spiders

Last few days

After we left the chooks in Shoalhaven we headed up to the Blue Mountains and a cold surprise. No house sits so a few days in an Airbnb cottage

Our first Blue Mountain experience is a Tiger Snake – too cold to attack us
I can’t make any excuses , the next few days we spent our time walking found the mountains and bush
So prepare for plenty of scenic shots
Our cottage was in Wentworth falls
Lyrebird Lookout
Top of Wentworth Falls
Start of The National Trail – not for me
The Falls
Heading to Sublime Point
Sublime
View over to the Three Sisters and Katoomba
Three Sisters from Echo Point
Base of 3 Sisters
The neck
Top of a Sister
Cold early morning walk

Last shots from Wentworth

Next stop the Grand Canyon
Not Arizona but Blackheath
It was a long walk
Start of the big climb out
Finally out for a spot of lunch
With a view
Evans point and the end of the Blue Mountains for the moment

Luna and the chooks

As we approach the end of the trip , it’s time to visit old friends . After a while on the Northern Beaches with a few days spare and a very kind offer , we head back to Yarrawarrah

Back in Yarrawarrah first thing to see is burnt bush . Fortunately it’s a controlled burn and the bears are safe
Fleur and Andre let us spend a few nights in her mums flat , with a chance to visit old haunts with Luna
Back to stick chucking
Around Cronulla
Sheltering from showers
Sneaking onto the beach
And rockpools , waiting for sticks
But the main reason for the southward trip was a final trip with Matt and Heather
Staying in Shoalhaven Bay with 3 chooks
Who had free run of the kitchen and garden
Gloria , Lana and Rita
Matt and Heather mean cocktails
Fizz
And a posh night out in my OP shop shoes and trousers
Good to see them again
Wild walks on 7 mile beach

North Narrabeen

Just down the road from Mona Vale , lies the swamplands of North Narrabeen, home to Maya the cat . So it’s back on the antihistamines for me and another 10 days in the Northern Beaches , this time a little further inland

A cosy little house & very kind owners , who spent a fair amount of time in a hotel in Sydney waiting for the wind to change and their flight to set off for Lord Howe Island
With no dog to walk and a painful shoulder preventing swimming , exercise was still on foot & this part of Sydney has tracks aplenty
So whilst Anita swam I trod the cliff tops – this one terminated in terrific downpour
However, not all walks were solo . Just next to the house were the Warriewood Wetlands & every morning we did a 2.5k loop
Plenty of wild life , I think this is an Eastern Brown Snake
Fruit bat ( flying fox ) roosts
Easter Whipbirds
More bats
Big Moorhens
The Irrawong falls ( trickle )
Usually early morning walks after a night of listening to poor old Maya the cat scratching on the bedroom door and crying
Another one off my dangerous Ozzie snakes list , a Red Bellied Black
Last wild walk on the Northern Beaches , up to the Ku – Ring – Gai NP and views down to Smiths Creek
Next stop , back to Yarrawarrah & Luna

Mona Vale

Staying in Sydney , but heading back to the Northern Beaches . Our first house sit there . And they are not that easy to get . Summer moves into Autumn , but the days get hotter

What the Northern Beaches do best is sand
And our house was 100m from a great one
With temperatures rising up to 39 c , this was the best place to be
Bella the Labrador had a few favourite walking places . The first was a dog park on top of the cliffs South of Mona Vale . Dogs are banned on the beach
Of course I found places dogs are also banned away from the beach
This was the Angaphora reserve near Avalon
And great coastal walks up and down the coast
Around cliff top golf courses
Of course Bella and Anita come too
Blue tongued skunk
Bella was well known in the local cafe – Ruby’s, especially for her big appetite
One for a later visit
One of Bella’s longer ventures to Warriewood Beach
Path down to Mona Vale beach
Our house was a beautiful weatherboard cabin
Bella’s other favourite walk is to Bay View dog park , with Scotland Island behind
Bella liked a bed time walk through the park and around the life saving club
Some creatures were keen to get out of my way
There was often a great surf out , Warriewood beach from the Sunrise Kiosk
One morning we took a risk and ventured onto the beach
But Bella knew Bay view dog beach was legal and swimming allowed
Another monitor out in the bush
Gordi and Alison visited with their friends Simon and Gail on the way to Tasmania . A fleeting visit to Palm Beach after a long lunch in Avalon
With my dicky shoulder , Anita was dropping me off on her way to the swimming pool
This time from Avalon walking south
Our house had a rather long and thin drive
Sunny evenings we often spent above the beach , catching the last few rays
Whilst Anita was swimming I wandered into the surrounding bush
With good views down to Bantry Bay
Last few of Bantry bay and desperate for a drink

Ed Sheeran and Stanmore

Having splashed out on Ed Sheeran tickets whilst in a bar in Brisbane, we needed a Western Sydney sit . Stanmore is Inner West , Bohemian and we had 3 dogs including a 3 legged Huskie

Out with Rory the Bordoodle at Glebe Foreshore
Dobby the Westie and Rory
Door step with Rory , Dobby and Anouk
The back garden and pool of Cardigan Road
When the Whites arrive you know it’s group selfie time
Harbour bridge in the distance
Matt and the dogs . Neither keen to dive in
Children in the pool
With patrolling dogs
Ed night , with 87000
Behind the Olympic Stadium
After spilling most of my beer on Matt
An amazing concert
Dobby has a fan
The inner West is great for breweries. So with the Sinclairs in town , what better than a brewery tour
The Grifter I think . We nearly bought shares
Dobby and Rory’s favourite game
Rory FOMO

Drive back to Sydney

Leaving Anita behind to look after Coco and the figs and do online training, I set off on the long drive back to Sydney . Three days later I was to pick her up at the airport and take her to meet the next house owners

Again I am not ashamed to say this is mainly my walking blog
To break the journey up I planned five hours driving a day with a food and walking stop halfway
First stop was Banrock Station winery and wetlands walk
Due to heavy early summer rainfall the lake had destroyed most of the walk and some of the vineyard
But today it was hot
And being a vineyard they had wine – fizzy red
Having loaded up with fruit from Frank’s garden , I forgot about the fruit quarantine rules . This was the only quarantine bin !
Next stop Lake Bonney at Barmera. Again flooding ended this part of the walk early
Too hot for the Cockatoos
First night was at Robinvsle , a very small town on the Murray river
First stop for day 2 was Hay . After a breakfast of chewy bacon and overcooked eggs , another walk on the river
And then a second walk at Narrendera
Second night of the trip is at Wagga Wagga
With storms at the coast and Sydney in the distance
With graveyard Roos
Final break in the Southern Highlands at Mittagong
And the end of a road trip , slow paced and plenty of off road time . Helped on the way by Ken Bruce , pop master and podcasts

Adelaide – heat wave

With only having a cat , our second week in Adelaide was very relaxing , but also very hot . Valentine’s Day was sweet , with a little ( but dry) Italian round the corner

Being tourists and with plenty of time we did a Port River cruise
Sadly not on this boat
Adelaide’s port is still busy , with big containers coming in
But is famous for it’s Bottlenose Ruver dolphins. Which was the point of the cruise. We were lucky and had one swim by the boat . The local news and local people said sightings are rare – due to river toxicity
Up stream was a nature reserve and ships graveyard
Coco the cat . Much easier than dog sitting , except when he brought a live Miner Bird in during the night
Anita’s use of a stubby holder to chill wine in 38 degree heat
Saturday market in Largs
Saturday night at the movies
Two friends of Anita , Joel and Nicole , who she met in Penang took us to the local Brewery in Pirt Adelaide for Sunday lunch
Good choice of beer
Unusual clumps of seaweed covered parts of our beach
We explored some of the southern Adelaide beaches

Adelinga beach . Dog walkers arrived in their cars and parked on the beach

Brighten beach
Adelinga Beach offered a different walking opportunity in the local bush
Early morning walk to Semophore – named after it’s signal station

That afternoon the thermometer was rising

Cruise ship at Outer Harbour
After a cool , 1 mile swim we headed South to the McLaren Vale . First stop Shingleback for a quick tasting . Here’s your wine enjoy!
Oliver’s Taranga gave us a much better , personal tasting
So bought a few bottles
A cool spot
Dr Who lamp post Semaphore
Largs station on way to Fringe
Outside Ross Noble tent at the Fringe – a crazy and much overweight Geordie

Largs Bay

Adelaide wasn’t planned . But after a Melbourne sit cancelled this one came up . One cat , near the beach , so why not

Largs Bay is in the North end of Adelaide . Long beaches and plenty of piers
Piers , at the end of which the boats sailed to and from England
Windy and fairly empty beaches
But plenty of sun and a Mediterranean climate
With scrub and dunes behind the beaches
One tom cat called Coco . Who pops in for food regularly
Port Adelaide is just next to us
After 10k mileage our car needed a service . After a random local selection I found a garage with an owner from Consett and a proper jersey on the wall
Adelaide has beaches from North to South . This is our little spot on Glenelg beach
With it’s own pier
Coco likes a stretch and roll after his lunch
I think he can escape
We have unlimited supply of grapes
Figs
And peaches
With a local pub quiz when we were briefly second
With so much sun why waste the walking tracks
Adelaide also has great golf courses
This one designed by Mackenzie
Local lamp posts
But Adelaide is best for wine
And the biggest area is the Adelaide hills
Home of the Pinot Noir
And we didn’t leave empty handed

Road Trip 1

Now begins our 15 hr , 3 day trip from Canberra to Adelaide . ACT to NSW , then Victoria & finally South Australia across the Hay plain

First stop was in Narrendera. Not much here . Most of the bars and hotels seemed shut . The highlight according to the motel manager is a fountain
Not very impressive, but made in Stoke by Royal Doulton
Nearby is a Koala walk
So I sneaked a quick 7k walk before we popped out to the RSL
Not the best shots
But mum and baby up a tree
First wild Koalas for me on this trip , after endless hours staring up into gums
Old iron bridge
The small town of Hay for a cup of coffee on the way to Mildura
Swimming pool stop
Next to a race course
But at 23 degrees it was too cold to open the pool
Mildur’s best gin distillery
The road from Mildura to Adelaide, passes through the Barossa Valley
So a spot of wine tasting seemed sensible

Good way to end the journey

Canberra tourists part 2

With our list of things to do in Canberra gradually being ticked off , days were passing before the long drive to Adelaide approached

First port of call was the Australian war memorial
Part memorial
A beautiful structure
Looking down Anzac parade to the Parliament
Quite moving
With plenty of poppies
And part museum
Which we sadly had to whizz round
Bit of Aboriginal art chucked in too
Back to dog walking
Luna and I climbed the Cooleman Ridge
Plenty of sun and wide views just behind M&H ‘s house
Luna on the lookout for water
Aussie way marker
Luna knows where she is going
Then our for breezy fish and chips at the yacht club
The lovely ladies
Next touristy bit is the bridge to bridge walk in central Canberra
And who did we meet , blow me , the “ Angel of the North “
Whatever a Maquette is
Poor old Matt was given a clay pigeon shooting experience for his Christmas
A beautiful night for a shoot
The result will never be published ( in order not to embarrass the Australian military) , but Matt would have had more chance with a Howitzer
Last dog walk with Luna
Then up Mount Ainslie

For the best views of Canberra

To end a great visit with best friends

A trip to Canberra

So after picnics and birthday parties in Manly it was time to head to meet up with Matt and Heather in Canberra

Bad news again. . After stopping for a few hours in Wollongong for a swim , poor old Norm the travelling Desert Rose sadly perished. Someone didn’t learn from previous mistakes
Stopped of in a winery at Coolangatta, NSW. In the blacksmith’s house
Plenty of vines
And nice wines

Then headed overland through countryside ravaged by firestorms in 2020

M &H were working so there was time to be tourists in the Capital
Starting on a wet day at the New Parliament
In the great hall with an Aussie tapestry
And as parliament wasn’t sitting a chance to see the Congress

And the Senate

The first assembly
And the rain
And when the rain eased I did what I am best at ..
Up Mount Stromlo
With the dog and a load of Kangaroos to the observatory
With views of the ranges around Canberra
And the city
When the sun came back next day , another walk with Luna
Around Narrabundah hill
And in the afternoon of to the Arboretum, to see the Bonzai & see how much they’ve grown since last time Anita was here in 2017
A beaut
Then up the hill to the lookout
For the view

Australia Day

Australia Day or “ Invasion Day “ as some call it , came at the end of our Northbridge sit . Everyone partied either discreetly at home or in the case of Sydney, on the nearest beach or beach park

So , while Anita and Daniel drove to the beach in Manly to snorkel. I decided to do the 12km Spit to Manly walk
Be prepared for a long series of photos of my walk to meet them
Past parks and beaches packed with Aussies
Coves and blue skies – initially
Under cliffs
Bays full of boats
More bays and more boats
As the walk went on thunder clouds came in
Up to a series of paintings
Not always so obvious
Looking down onto Manly
Finally reached Fairlight and nearing Manly
Views round to Shelley Beach
And back along Manly Beach
All that walking generated a hearty appetite for a picnic on the promenade
For his last few days in Australia & ours in Sydney , Daniel joined us . And Timmy loved him ( neither liked going for a walk )
It coincided with his birthday. So back to Manly
With a few others , Charlie, Ella and Katherine
And whilst the youngsters were out partying, we got back first to tuck into his cake

Northbridge in Sydney

So finishing if this leg of the Sydney trip , the next stop was in Northbridge. A leafy suburb of Sydney, central and near the mid harbour with a lovely dog called Timmy – famous 5 !

Here’s Timmy , in the foreground
A Sheppa Doodle . Part Old English sheep dog . Shaggy and big feet
Plenty of good dog walks around the house , but a bit of a climb up and down to the best parts
Super spots looking onto mid harbour
Fortunately, unlike Luna , Timmy is not a water fan
Anita’s old junior minister from Cambridge now works locally, so we had a morning at Balmoral beach
A beautiful day
The kids love Timmy
Plenty of beautiful inlets
And tracks to explore
Bob Hawke lived and died nearby
More inlets , bays and creeks . Timmy is there somewhere
Timmy’s water avoidance
Northbridge also had a saltwater baths . Daniel spotted stingray
And Anita jellyfish, so only lasted 2 lengths
After a while Timmy smelt too much so Daniel cleaned him in the shower
We had a Saturday brunch in Manly
A big day there for the Surf Lifesavers. Teams came from all over Australia, but weren’t allowed in the sea . Evidently a dolphin was attacked by a Bull Shark . Didn’t stop the surfers . Safely in numbers

Last days in Sutherland

With the sun out again and hot days mixed in with the rain we passed the last few days in Yarrawarrah with swimming and hiking

The trip ended with seeing Elton John on his farewell tour

With Anita having a long hair do , I jumped at the opportunity for a hike

The coastal walk in the Royal National Park

A little reminiscent of a hike on the Algarve
Limestone Cliffs
And streams
One sunbather
Ending in Eagle head rock
Next day we met up with another Anita , our pharmacist at Beaufort
Visiting her friend at Bundeena
A small resort with a beach in the National Park
Just across the bay from Cronulla
But we couldn’t hang around, with the threat of storms we were off to see Elton
The Allianz Stadium, next to the SCG
We got there early
Elton didn’t disappoint
Though the weather eventually did , those poor souls and Elton got very wet in a mega storm

Walks with Luna

So when you’re living in the bush by the sea , the best thing to do is get out into the bush and who loves the bush and the beach , but Luna

We had a few last days with Amy before she went back to college in the US
So with the sun out and it was after 4pm it was off to Cronulla dog beach with the masses of dog walkers
Happy ladies
Next day Amy’s fairwell meal at Cronulla
Luna came too ,
Next day I set off into the national park again on a creek walk
Beautiful creeks , but too many eels
Perfect walk and weather on empty trails
Full of eels !
Following a local recommendation we had a day at Stanwell Park beach
It had a small dog friendly area of the beach
And the sun came out
And the beach got to hot . A good place to hide from the paragliders
Thirsty work for a shaggy dog

Out and about with Luna

Passing the summer days in Yarrawarrah on the edge of the bush isn’t a bad way to pass early January . The pool man came and was very impressed that I’d kept the pool clear , though slightly green

An alternative to having my nails done was a walk home from the nail bar

What way to dry your nails , though getting out not always easy
The local King Parrots were regular visitors to the balcony
And would eat out of our hands
As would the Lorekeets
Anita often joined the morning dog walks down to Lina’s favourite creek
King parrots gorging , despite our feeding them
Water dragons by the creek
Cooling off and waiting for her stick
Back at the ranch
With the dog
Few balcony shots
The King Parrots are back
Sun setting

Days in the country

With the weather very changeable around Sydney we spent the next week passing our time not doing a lot , hiking , dog walking and checking out the area

The next week or so was mixed weather with heavy showers, especially whilst dog walking
On the only local dog walking beach at Cronulla
The “Nulla”
Poor Luna
Below us is some wild country and creeks for dog walks
The routes blocked by recent storms
With the wind up on the storms further north we had a day trip to Wollongong
Wild and windy
But beautiful coastline .

21st Birthday Girl

All the way from America, Amy came to see us and so Anita & Ella organised a big 21st day

Behind Amy is today’s first birthday objective
On which she will be joined by her brother Daniel, who admits fear of heights
Anita relaxing the two climbers
Whilst the kids are climbing, the rest of us had 3 hours to kill
In the shade on Observatory Hill
Checking out the Bay
Too far to see the climbers
But up on the bridge
Looking down on the Opera House
And then up , there they are , 3rd & 4th from the back
After the climb , off to Manly for Ella’s party
Manly beach party
With Ella
On a lovely evening
Dad flew out specially
Katherine
The Hawling girls
Gina & Luna
Charlie
A lovely night and day

Yarrawarrah

Next stop was 3 weeks in Yarrawarrah. Very South Sydney near the Royal National Park . The house was at the end of a cul de sac and pretty much in the bush

Rather than drive into Sydney we found a spot at Kurnell on the southern end of Botany Bay , a stone’s throw from Captain Cook’s landing place
At 9 o’clock crowds appeared from the surrounding party to join us for the early fireworks
Rather distant on a night that felt more like Redcar than a Sydney , so we upped our stuff and went home to watch telly .
New Year’s Day , first Koala and a dog walk into the bush down to Loftus Creek
Luna the Corgi cross
Lover of the creek and a good stick chase
First chance and she’s in
Waiting for the stick
While the girls went shopping, I wandered into the National Park
Plenty of bush
After a hot trail l enjoyed a stroll up the motorway, guided by google maps
